Nothing makes a space quite as comfortable, calming, or as attractive as a whole lot of plants. Proven by science to calm our nerves and bring us a sense of peace, we’ve evolved alongside plants for countless millions of years, so having as many around is sure to offer a profound sense of serenity.
Not everyone has a large garden where they’re able to create the outdoor environment of their dreams, meaning that it’s often a better idea to instead put as many plants as possible into indoor rooms. With that in mind, these are the best indoor plants worth investing in.
The Swiss Cheese Plant
With large, unmistakable leaves, this is a plant that has long been a favourite on social media. They’re extremely easy to grow, and the adult plant offers lush and bright green leaves with distinct holes in them. They prefer a warmer climate, and are not fans of being left in direct sunlight. It’s important to take the time to clean the leaves with a soft, damp cloth every now and again. In terms of watering, it’s best to allow the soil to dry out properly before adding more, as too much watering can easily lead to root rot.
Devil’s Ivy
Also commonly known as pothos, Devil’s ivy is an easy-to-take-care-of vine that grows quickly and makes for a very appealing decorative plant for any room. They can be planted in pots, hanging baskets, and even smaller cuttings can be added to glass vases. They’re low maintenance and gorgeous, and come in a variety of shapes and colours. They do not require regular fertilisation and can go for ages without any watering. It’s worth watering around once a week, and then cut back when necessary every fortnight during winter.
Peace Lily
The Peace Lily is a special favourite for those that battle to successfully grow plants but want to have one in their home. It’s long been a popular choice for any home, and its dark foliage and beautiful white flowers make for a true display for any room. They do well in indirect sunlight, as long as there is plenty of brightness. Without adequate light, they may battle to bloom properly, and it’s important to note that they’re fairly prone to root rot, so avoid watering too much, rather waiting for the soil to dry out first. It’s also a good plant to keep away from children, as the leaves can be poisonous.
Zanzibar Gem
For a plant that’s as close to indestructible as possible, it’s difficult to go wrong with the Zanzibar Gem. It’s a stunning plant that’s aimed at those that tend to get carried away with life, watching series, looking after the kids, or getting stuck in to blackjack in Canada, and just want something that will survive, nonetheless. The Zanzibar Gem is a tuber, meaning that it’s able to hold on to water for long periods of time, making it a survivor against most forms of neglect. In fact, it’s one of the few plants in the world that actually does better if neglected a bit.
