SEPTEMBER’S SONG

Dusk comes early now
darkness creeps up from bushes and shrubs,
cool breezes signal the entrance of autumn.

Autumn
when we descend into the underworld with Persephone,
when Demeter’s wails for her daughter
are heard throughout the land,
when parents grieve for lost children.

September’s song–
when the harvest is still bountiful,
canning applesauce and peach chutney
to eat during winter snow storms,
when we light fires on damp mornings
and pray for our friends riding
their horses in the cool breezes
to the world beyond.
